There are a few surprises in the 82nd Annual Academy Award Nominations, especially with the Best Picture field increasing from five to ten movies. The main reason for the change was to give more widely appealing, mass-market films the chance to be nominated for the award where smaller, indie pics would usually be the norm. The controversial change has somewhat diluted the prestige of being named a "Best Picture" nominee, but at the same time its bringing the Oscars into a new realm of relevancy with casual film-goers who wouldn't normally care to see the telecast and bring in the very awesome advertising dollars everyone wants.

The biggest surprise of all is the nomination of District 9 (a sci-fi film) for Best Picture as well as the double nomination for Up (Best Picture, Best Animated Picture (Full Length)). Hollywood's fixation with the merely average (story-wise) Avatar shows with its multiple nominations including best picture (another sci-fi nomination? Is this really happening?).

This year's likely favorites, "Up in the Air," "The Blind Side," and "The Hurt Locker" all have strong showings so let the Vegas odds-making begin!
